How to tighten the brakes on a Craftsman Lawnmower

Craftsman Lawnmowers feature a brake pedal that allows the operator to stop the tractor or change gears. The tractor brake works using an arm and cable  that extends from the brake pedal to the brake rotor located in the transmission gearbox. Step 1: Park the lawnmower on a level surface where it can’t move. You may want to put wheel blocks under the wheels. Turn off the mower and let it cool.

Step 2: Close to  the right rear tire is the brake cable arm attachment. The small spring connects the brake cable to the metal lever that operates the brake pad in the transmission.

Step 3: Loosen the outer nut that holds the inner nut tight. Tighten the inner nut until the spring is about 1.5-2.0 inches long. Tighten the outside nut against the inside nut to hold it in place.

Step 4: Start the mower and see if the brakes are tight. Repeat the steps above if necessary to get the brakes operating properly.
